Commanders' biggest offseason question: What's next at QB?
Sam Howell Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders are poised to select a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, regardless of whether Caleb Williams is available or not.

The fate of Sam Howell, their current quarterback, remains uncertain amidst this impending decision. Despite showing promise during stretches of the 2023 season, Howell, at 23, may find himself relegated to a backup role should the Commanders opt for a new signal-caller.

Zach Selby, the Commanders’ team writer, sheds light on the organization’s approach to the No. 2 pick and the quarterback dilemma under a fresh coaching and ownership regime.

“It’s the biggest question the Commanders need to answer this offseason. Howell showed some promise as the starter in his second season, but with the team in position to possibly get a franchise player with second pick in the draft, resetting at quarterback is an option it must consider.”

He went on to talk more about the quarterbacks available and what the Commanders will do in the coming weeks.

“Caleb Williams is considered the best prospect, although he’s expected to be taken by the Chicago Bears, assuming they don’t trade out of the No. 1 overall pick. However, this is also considered a deep class with players like Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix all projected to be first-round picks. If Peters and Quinn do decide to take a quarterback, they’ll spend the next few months weighing the advantages that each signal-caller presents.”

Even without selecting a quarterback in the first round, Howell could encounter stiff competition from an incoming rookie QB in 2024, as the Commanders seek greater consistency and efficiency at the position.

Should the Commanders choose to part ways with Howell via trade, his value to another team in the league remains evident. Despite his 21 interceptions in 2023, Howell’s 3,946 passing yards and 21 touchdowns underscore his potential, albeit overshadowed by turnover concerns.

While Howell’s situation with the Commanders may appear unfortunate, it could serve as a catalyst for revitalizing his career. With numerous teams in search of quarterbacks this offseason, Howell may emerge as a sought-after option for organizations seeking a fresh talent under center.
