The Steelers Add Insurance At Wide Reciever, May Decide To Avoid The Position Entirely During The 2023 NFL Draft
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers added some insurance at wide receiver Monday afternoon with the signing of Miles Boykin to a one-year contract. Boykin played very sparingly on offense last season but proved to be one of the team's best special teams players. He was highly effective as a gunner in punt formation and was second on the team in special teams tackles with 10.

While the Steelers seem to already have their top four receivers in place with Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, Allen Robinson II and Calvin Austin III, Boykin may have the ability to have an increased role on offense in 2023 if he performs well during training camp as well as the preseason. During his first two seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, Boykin hauled in seven touchdown passes on only 55 targets. At 6'4" and 220 pounds, he is a strong, physically-imposing presence who may provide value to the Steelers offense in the red zone.

It will certainly be difficult for him to take snaps away from players such as Johnson and Pickens, but it is ensuring to know that the Steelers have a capable backup with Boykin in the fold. The team was lucky enough to steer clear of injuries at pass catcher in 2022, but this may not be the case in 2023. Boykin is only a play away from being a feature wide receiver for the Steelers.

General Manager Omar Khan has done an exceptional job this offseason of adding quality players at crucial positions to ensure the team does not miss a beat even if injuries arise. Boykin is only the latest example of this in action. Combine this with his strong special teams play, and Boykin may prove to be one of the more underrated free agent signings.

The Steelers Will Most Likely Not Add To The WR Room During The 2023 NFL Draft

The additions of Boykin along with Robinson II should allow the Steelers to feel comfortable with their depth at wide receiver heading into this week's NFL Draft. The team currently possesses a nice mix of players at the position with outside options such as Johnson, Pickens and Boykin to go along with slot options such as Robinson II, Anthony Miller and Gunner Olszewski.

While many may be disappointed in the Steelers most likely not adding a rookie wide receiver to the mix in 2023, this decision may ultimately allow for Khan and the front office to address other key positions such as offensive line, defensive line, outside linebacker and cornerback. Furthermore, the team may feel as if the class of wide receivers is not up to par with years past and felt more comfortable with filling out the position with veterans as opposed to rookies.

Boykin's Exceptional Special Teams Play Should Not Be Overlooked

With Boykin clearly outside of the top four at wide receiver, his willingness to play on all four special teams units will give him a leg up on players such as Miller and Olszewski to make the roster in 2023. The Steelers have yet to re-sign other core members of the special teams group such as Derek Watt, Marcus Allen and Benny Snell Jr. Bringing back Boykin will absolutely bring a smile to Danny Smith's face, as will the addition of Tanner Muse, a fellow core-four special teams player.

Boykin proved himself to be a well-respected, dependable player for the Steelers in 2022 and will have the opportunity to expand in 2023. Should the Steelers hold true and not add a player to the position during the NFL Draft, his chances of being the team's fifth wide receiver increase dramatically. He is more than capable of doing so. With another full offseason in Pittsburgh under his belt, Boykin may play a bigger role for the black and gold next season than many realize.
